Fundraising Update!!

Hi Everyone,

 Just an update on Fundraising and organisation for degree show-

The Catalogue has been sent to print after an astounding amount of sleepless, indesign filled nights for Lauren and the rest of the catalogue gang- so if you see Lauren, Taki, Luke or James remember to buy them a drink for all of their hard work.

Also on this note- Neil Stoker has the website up and running, so you should have recently received log-in details for the site so you can upload any photos/information about your work that you want.

Fundraising:

Recently there has been a massive and successful push from the members of the fundraising team to get the last amounts of money that we need. The Homonculas event on Friday raised £460 (Thank you Benji, Annie, Kiera, Hazel, plus all others that helped with this event) and the Summer Fayre the previous Friday raised another £450 (Again, thank you to Joe an all the stall holders). We have also had various other things going on like ‘The Disney Boat Party’ and the ‘Made in Chelsea’ DVD launch. However, with at least 3 weeks to go before the PV, there are still ways to help raise a couple of £’s:

‘Made in Chelsea’ – A DVD containing 12 pieces of video art from different students in our year is available to buy at just £5 in aid of fundraising- If you would like to buy one of these DVD’s please contact:  Joe Easeman-  joe_easeman@live.co.uk  (CG11)

Year Photo – The year Photo is still available to buy at £5 for an A4 copy and £8 for an A3 copy, again please contact Joe Easeman to order one, or to pick up and pay if you have already ordered. He has all of the prints in his studio, so please drop by and see him in CG11.

Organisation for degree show:

Student Contact Desk: As Gill said in the previous meeting, there will be a student contact desk timetable posted on the degree show board by the lecture theatre. Each slot is 2 hours and there are enough times throughout the show for everyone in our year to do 2 hours. So please sign up. While on the contact desk you will be expected to sit by the canteen and talk to visitors about work, help with maps and information about students etc

Student Price list: As discussed in the meeting last week, there is a price list organised by the college with a 20% commission. There has been in the past a price list made by students who do not want to  pay commission on selling their work and would prefer to sell directly to the buyer without the colleges input. Sam Rudd has kindly proposed to make this list and support students in selling their artwork on a commission free basis. Paint: There have been suggestions to buy some extra white paint this year, as it is known to run out every year, as Sharon can only order a certain amount. She has advised how much extra we would need to buy- however, as well as the white paint being needed there is also interest in getting some black paint as well- however I will need to estimate how much we need by people getting in touch with me if they are going to paint their spaces back. Performance Timetable: If you are doing a performance during the private view and/or the week show, please let Tim Ridley know, as there will be a performance guide to be given out during the Private View and Show. He needs your performance times ASAP due to printing times so please get those to him as soon as possible: tim.ridley@yahoo.co.uk

Finally, I have managed to rope in 3 1^st year students to help us out during the Private view (Catalogue/ drink giving out etc) however we will probably need about 3 or 4 more- so if you know any 1^st or 2^nd years that can be bribed easily with free drink and a catalogue, please put them in contact with me: nataliebays@msn.com

Fundraising Update

Fundraising and Catalogue update

Hello Everybody,

It is time for us to collect your photo entries for the catalogue. This information needs to be sent to us by the end of this month, so get choosing! Please read the attachment for full details of everything we need to know and that you need to do. If you have any problems with this information please contact Luke.

In terms of fundraising, to date we have raised approximately £3,800 for the end of year show/ catalogue; as you can probably tell- this is not very much in comparison to what we were aiming to raise (£10,000). However there is still hope, and with this hope comes some fantastic things going on in the name of fundraising!

There have been some fantastic events this term that have raised a substantial amount of money including the very classy Postcard Auction which, thanks to Ellie, Taki and many others raised over £2500 for the fundraising efforts, this was followed with The Last Post arranged by Benji and Annie which was also a fabulous event involving some brilliant music and a very unique raffle (More events like this to follow) We have also had a continuation of our regular, very tasty bake sales with thanks to Niomie and Tim.
We do have some new events coming up, so we would be very greatful if you could try and help/ participate as much as possible to try and raise those last ‘couple of pounds’ and to have a great time before we have to leave college.

Protest Day /Clothes Sale: Thursday 24th March
-There is a scheduled banner making event on the parade ground hosted by Sasha and Hazel in the parade ground on Thursday afternoon which is in preparation for the TUC protest on 26th March, to compliment this there is also going to be a clothes sale and hopefully some light refreshments for sale. This will also lead onto an event in the evening hosted by Utopia London. The event is open to all interested in the Friday protest and hopefully students from other UAL colleges will also be there for a social day- so please feel free to bring people along and spread the word (If you would like to know more about the protest and the banner making event please contact Sasha)
For this event we are looking for people that would like to sell clothes as well as clothes donators. Also if anyone could bake/cook/ pour tea/ run a stall in aid of fundraising. Please contact myself

As you may already know, the year photo is kindly being professionally printed by Barbara in A4 and A3. So if anyone would like a copy of this please contact myself or Joe to put your name on the printing list.

Chelsea Artists DVD
There are plans to make a DVD of artworks to sell for funds, of student and Tutor work. We will be asking tutors to submit as well as anyone from our year. We would like submissions of either video work of around 6mins or shorter, or a selection of stills. If you would like to donate a work or even a segment of a work please contact myself or Joe and we will be able to download your work from a memory stick or DVD

Summer Fayre
Following the success of the Christmas Fayre, Joe has kindly agreed to organise a Summer Fayre which will be happening very soon after the Easter holidays. Again we are asking for stall holders for this event as well as ideas and marquees! If you would like to run a stall to sell your own products, we will be asking for a donation of £20 for a stall or 15% of the stalls profits. If you would like to run a stall or have any ideas please contact Joe.

Catalogue

The catalogue seems to be getting sorted now which is good, everyone has a role and i think with quotes of costing we are set on binding and size of catalogue- we just need to collect an image and various details from 100 people before the end of term which wont be easy. Also again i am worrying that with all the plans made to print the catalogue that our fundraising wont prevail and we will be left with a hefty bill. That is a very negative outlook though and there is no reason why we cant raise enough.

Postcard Auction: My postcard!

I've just noticed that my postcard has been put on the Website for the Chelsea Postcard Auction! It is coming up on the 28th February in one of the more fancy rooms in Chelsea- Have a browse to see what else can be bought at the sale  (If you have a look through there is an Anish Kapoor in there, among many more interesting artists) and if you would like to buy- come along!

Fundraising

My tutorial was interrupted slightly today by a swarm of people coming into the opt-in space; Andrew was a little confused as to why they came and sat with us until we moved and i had to explain that half of our year had come to the opt-in space to talk to me about fundraising. The tutorial did go really well though- for once i think we were both on par with where i have to take my dissertation next and he was pleased that i had managed to get some reading done over Christmas.
The fundraising meeting i thought was really good- we found out a lot of information about the postcard auction that's going to happen and there was a lot of enthusiasm about having an event after the Dissertation hand in and after the postcard auction itself. I offered mine and Joe's services as Ushers during the Postcard auction which will be fun- it means we'll get to dress up! we are also going to do a mass of bake sales in the next couple of weeks to get some funds- I'm organising it next week because Tim is in the show set up, but we have had lots of offers of help so it shouldn't be too busy.

Chelsea Christmas Fayre

we woke up to a mass amount of snow this morning and the decision had to be made weather or not (pun totally intended) the Christmas fayre was going to be called off or not. a difficult decision as Joe had spent a lot of time and effort in organising the fayre, and on one side of the question- how many people were going to turn up to college today and on the other, how do you organise the same level of involvement for a different day in the week. We gave Tim a call- he was already on his way to college with his shirts to sell and said that he had spoken to couple of other stall holders who were also on their way- it shone a little light on the situation that people would still be coming into college if they could. Our journey in wasn't bad either- perhaps after 3 solid days of snow people just get on with things and forget to panic about it. However when we got to college the parade ground had been closed off and it was very cold outside- not many wanted to sit outside. So part two of the conundrum, where do you put a fleet of 20 stalls if not outside in a large parade ground. Joe went off to haggle with various people for space inside the college while i went to instruct people about what was going on.

Joe triumphed and at 11am (only half an hour after schedule) the majority of the stalls were set up, lined along the corridor. In a way this was a better space than the parade ground anyway because there was a constant flow of people through the space, buying cards and food. Unfortunately there were one or two stalls that would have benefited from the space next to the Tate Britain- but overall i think everyone was happy that they were warm.

My stalls were all a bit of a mess in the end- the hook the duck and face painting didn't get set up until about 1pm because i was watching so many other stalls, whilst at the same time helping people set up, and when i did eventually get around to filling my hook the duck the paddling pool had a hole in it. So hook the duck became a little stationary after i had to remove the water. I think this was a bit of a novelty though and drew in a couple of people so they could laugh at my failed attempts. Another problem that we had was that the mulled wine stall that was borrowing my induction hob had an aluminium pan so couldn't actually use it- we fixed this in a 'health and safety nightmare' way by running down to the foundry and borrowing a piece of steel to place between the hob and the pan (meanwhile Joe ran to Sainsbury's to buy a new pan but unfortunately that was also aluminum).
My Christmas cards all sold- hooray! Gill said she had bought mine specifically to send to members of her family who she knew wouldn't like them, I'm not sure if that is a good thing or not- but she did buy them so I'll take it as a compliment. Overall we raised a good £400 which was amazing, plus Joe managed to get various members of staff to do Karaoke which was excellent viewing. So well done to everybody, especially Joe who i think will need a well deserved rest for a week after this!

SNOW!

As the blizzard swallowed up all of the little houses in old London town and isolated towns in parts of Kent and delayed people getting to work and forced a number of commuters from Brighton to sleep on a train throughout the night, Natalie was traipsing through the snow in Essex buying fags for her nan.

It was very cold, and just as i always do, i had managed to leave going to see my nan until a day that it snowed. Not only that but i couldn't go a different day because my nan had ran out of cigarettes and milk and the sheltered housing that she lives in is never properly gritted outside (the local council do know how to deal with snow, don't they) I usually refuse to buy my nan cigarettes- but as i was going to be the only one seeing her in a couple of days i felt as if i had too (I got id'd as well- proves how often i buy these types of things). She also warned me before i got there that people would be panic buying milk so she wasn't fussed which type she had- as long as i got some. She's right- people do panic buy milk in a crisis- but it doesn't make sense "we have no food but as long as we have milk in our tea everything is dandy!" The trains weren't too bad in the end either, i managed to get to Essex on Monday and back to London on Tuesday, usually anything is a reason to stop the trains in Essex but i think this time it was obvious that Kent was hit the worst and they were still running a service (In a town in Kent a news reporter measured the snow as being a '4 pints of milk carton' deep!- that's accurate milk crisis measuring for you)

Anyway, at my nan's we had a good chat about my upcoming exhibition in the Opt-in space. I'm making a piece of work relating Christmas in the war to Christmas in the present recession so i wanted to see if there was anything she could give me tips on. All i found out really was how awful Christmas was if you were evacuated- she told me one story about how for Christmas one year she had to sit in silence all day with her evacuee family while the other children played and then had to be grateful for a pair of ankle socks she had been given. A little different from the Children nowadays with their Wii's and DS's. I think i might make a point of that in the work. Also she gave me a funny idea involving ladies stockings. I'm unsure if I'll use the actual information she gave me in the work. But it is a good insight into the past that i can definitely reflect on in my performance.

I'm helping in the Christmas fayre tomorrow, however if the snow doesn't ease up I'm not sure if it will be going ahead? I'm supposed to be doing hook the duck, face painting and a cake raffle (picture of the cake i made below- it is Chelsea college in the snow!) I've also made some Christmas cards- hopefully they will sell well- if not I'll be a little embarrassed, and I'm also to run the Tombola before Anika gets out of her seminar and help Joe set up. I feel a long day of fundraising ahead...

Collaborative Presentation

Today in our Seminar we found out that we are to do collaborative presentations of our work in the coming weeks. I have been put in a pair with a girl whose work links to mine because of it's social interest- we were told we were put together because we both had accents- but after speaking for a long time it was clear that this wasn't the case, i don't even think i have an accent. Anyway, it was interesting mainly because i haven't really spoken to this person about my work before and to a majority extent don't know hers. We both work in extremely different ways- the ethos of Bex is to relax and find the right time to make her work, for me it is more about doing something straight away and jump in the deep end without thinking. So as we have decided to make a collaborative piece of work for next Thursday this should be interesting.
Bex is interested in everyday systems (For example phoning a call centre) and in a way another link to mine is that her work can be around small amounts of angst that cannot be resolved. Her work usually comes in the form of nuggets of information that can be found, if you want to find them- my work is a lot more confrontational. Another thing that will make the out come of our collaboration more interesting.

I also had another fundraising meeting today- one of success due to the astonishing amount of money the baking Team make on their first Sale- It was around £250 and they managed to sell everything that was made. We have decided to have the bake sales once a month to generate the best income as possible- I'm trying to encourage the baking team to have themes for the next couple of sales. Joe today also announced that he was going to be organising a Christmas Fayre for the 1st December- it sounds like there are a lot of people interested in running a stall- hopefully we can make a good amount of money from this too.

Fundraising, Training, House Finding and Thesis

Things are slowly coming together to suggest how packed to the brim this year will be. It is only the first Monday of the working term and i haven't stopped today. We have 2,000 words to hand in on Wednesday for our thesis (A little pressure reminded to us in our third year meeting today). Something i should have taken more time on over the summer- I underestimated how busy i would be with work- not a valid excuse really, but something that i can possibly resolve by good time management now.
 On the upside though, we have found somewhere to live- I received the call during a training course on Friday morning to confirm- hopefully we will be able to move in this week- although i will probably have to leave it until the weekend now.
 The training course that i was in on Friday continued today as well. It was a course to aid public speaking and presentation skills- It was really useful, as we are just about to commence a year of prospective student presentations in the lecture theatre, which will most likely be daunting and full of in-answerable questions. The main aspect of the course that i thought was really great was that the two people that were giving the advice were graduates of our college that had started their own business doing these workshops. It did give me a bit of hope for when i leave college that i might be able to get a job or even work for myself- here's to hoping!
There is still this year to get through though- and there is lots of work to be involved with. After the stage 3 meeting we got together to talk about fundraising for the degree show. We need to raise £10-15,000 to fund everything including catalogues, drink and extras. We did have a very productive meeting though, where we spoke about positions we would like to take within the fundraising team- and lots of people were keen to put in ideas of what they could do to help. I think our first bake sale is in a week or so to start off the fundraising. So good luck bakers with that.
Better get off and continue writing my Thesis...
